A Raisin in the Sun

by Lorraine Hansberry

The amount of times I had to put this book down out of frustration is record breaking. A Raisin in the Sun follows the Younger family, a poor African American family living in a cramped apartment in Chicago, as they are receiving the grandfather’s life insurance check of $10,000. Each person in the family wants the money to be used to make a better life for themselves, but they all have their own opinions on how a better life is achieved. Although short, the play delves so deeply into the pride of each character whether manly, cultural or familial. It’s like looking into a life, they are exhausted with their situation and it feels like it drags you down as well. The characters are all so complex, and even when one does something wrong you still are inclined to root for the theme because they make you understand. This is for the people who want a short read that is strong and hits them hard and fast.
